2nd Asia Pacific Biochar Conference (APBC KYOTO 2011) Toward Human and Environmental Symbiosis Using Biochar September 15 – 18, 2010 Kinugasa Campus, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan Hosted by:Japan Biochar Association (JBA), Japan Association for Human and Environmental Symbiosis(JAHES), And Ritsumeikan University In affiliation with: Australian New Zealand Biochar Researchers Network (ANZBRN) And International Biochar Initiative(IBI)
Climate change has surpassed all expectations and become a profound issue worldwide. Carbon sequestration in soils using “Biochar” is a possible counter measure for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Biochar is a stable carbon-rich product that results from heating biomass materials. The Asia Pacific Biochar Conference (APBC KYOTO 2011) aims at further developing a methodology of carbon sequestration in soils using biochar and at designing systems for diffusing biochar production and use. The 1st APBC held on the Gold Coast of Australia was attended by more than 200 participants. Building upon this experience and in order to further strengthen biochar within the region, the 2nd APBC will be held at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan in September, 2011. It is hoped that the conference will contribute to sustainable development in rural areas throughout the Asia-Pacific region and to the mitigation and adaptation of climate change on a global scale.

To hold the APBC KYOTO 2011 in Japan is more than some can dream of. I hope that an intense collaboration between the experts and citizens of the Asia Pacific region will be put into practice and that a mutually productive relationship among people within the region will be built by involving experts and citizens from other regions as well. I am looking forward to seeing you in Kyoto.
